The Elite Agency, Inc. opened its doors in 1989 as a small corporation in eastern KY with only $400,000 in commission income. Now it generates approximately $4,000,000 in commission revenues. A large portion of these revenues is still generated by coal clients despite the challenging market environment for energy-based risks. Sixty-five percent of Elite’s book of business is derived from commercial accounts with the remainder at 30% from personal lines business and 5% from life and health accounts.

The agency owners all reside in Martin County, Kentucky and are active in various organizations and not for profit groups.
Elite represents over 20 standard carriers as well as many MGA’s and specialty companies. The agency is included in the Liberty Mutual Winner’s Circle of Agents and Kentucky National’s group of “A” Agents. The agency benefits from in-house underwriting and binding authority with at least 10 carrier partners. Earlena Duncan is the Sales and Operations manager for the team and Mark Grim acts as the Carrier Relations Manager and service team leader. Each have been involved in the insurance industry for over twenty years. Earlena is a designated CIC and her prior work experience is in banking, while Mark’s background is accounting.
The central office is in Lexington, KY. The Controller, Chuck Carroll is housed in the accounting department in Lexington, KY. Chuck has been involved in insurance accounting and has been licensed for 25 years. Ron Wells manages the Lexington sales office. Ron was a former agency owner in Paintsville, KY before selling his agency to Elite.
The agency has three other sales divisions. Doris Mattingly, a 30 year insurance veteran, leads the Pikeville Division and manages a book of business totaling over $1.5 million in commission. The second largest division is managed by Sheri Music. It includes the newly acquired Hatton and Allen Agency in Prestonsburg and the Paintsville location. Her book of business is largely personal lines and totals nearly $1 million dollars. The third sales division includes Inez and Louisa and is managed by Marlena Lafferty. Marlena joined the team in 1999 and was licensed as an agent in 2000. In addition to managing her two sales offices, she is also active in outside sales.
House accounts are managed by Bill Staggs, CIC. Bill became an agent just after graduating Pikeville College 25 years ago. He is assisted by Gayle Collins and they service the accounts that are controlled by our owners. The life and health accounts are being marketed by team leader Kevin Wagner. Kevin is also active in Property and Casualty Sales. Elite rounds out its team with the services of four outside account managers whose insurance experience includes a CPCU designation and average insurance experience of twenty five years.
